Ola in association with the Bengaluru Traffic Police spearheads ‘Road Safety’ seminar in the city
- Organised with an aim to educate its driver partners on the importance of safe driving practices
Bengaluru, January 16th, 2017: As part of a continued campaign aimed at promoting safe driving practices, Ola, India’s most popular mobile app for transportation in association with Bengaluru Traffic Police organised a Road Safety seminar for driver partners. The seminar was conducted by the eminent MA Mohamad, Inspector HAL Traffic Police Department at the Ola Office on Saturday, 14 January, 2016.
The senior officials of Police, along with other attending dignitaries deliberated and educated driver partners on road discipline, dangers of over-speeding and fatigue while driving. As part of their endeavour to implement efficient road safety practices, driver partners were informed on the importance of knowing and following traffic rules and encouraged to ensure that they get their car serviced and parts checked on a regular basis. At the end of the session, driver partners pledged to ride safely on the road and treat customers in the right manner.
MA Mohamad, Inspector HAL Traffic Police Department, said, “As one of the fastest growing metropolis in India, we are not only experiencing heavy congestion on our streets, risk factors too are increasing drastically. At least 2 people die every day in Bangalore due to accidents, because people are misinformed on safe road practices such as traffic rules, car maintenance, etc. As an advocate for safe driving, Ola’s large network of drivers will set a great example to other drivers to apply safe road practices.”
Karanveer Singh Shekhawat, Vice President – Operations at Ola, said, “Ola has always been forthcoming in making sure that its large network of drivers contribute towards building safe-road environment. It’s an honour to partner with Bangalore Traffic Police, and together, work towards educating our drivers on safe road practices. The seminar was very well attended by hundreds of our driver partners and it’s worth emphasizing BTP’s efforts in instilling a sense of road discipline in them. We are confident that this initiative will go a long way in ensuring safe commute for drivers and other commuters alike,”
India has one of the highest cases of road accidents in the world, accounting for a loss of 3 percent of its GDP annually. In 2015, 1, 46,133 people were killed in road accidents in India, a 4.6% rise over 2014 when 1, 39,671 people lost their lives. In 2015, Karnataka alone saw 10,856 road deaths; the figure stood at 10,444 in 2014. Of these, Bangalore continues to contribute about 30% of road fatalities in the state. According to data from Bangalore traffic police, 740 deaths occurred in the 4,828 accidents reported in 2015, making a very sound case for the growing need for adequate road safety measures.
